Gloria J Zucaro's " A New Impression"

6"H x 6"W Original Oil on Raymar Canvas Panel

This is my July entry into Ria Hills "Shoot and Paint" challenge.  http://shootandpaint.blogspot.com/  We were to take her photo of the American flag and interpret it in our own way.  Since I was working on a 6 x 6 canvas panel, I decided to change the shape of the impressionistic flag I was going to do.  I first covered the board in a transparent orange.  When it dried I added Indian yellow under the "white" stripes, Alizarin Crimson under the "red" stripes, and Caribbean blue under the star patch.  Then I mixed pools of darks, mediums and lights to mix up both the red stripes and the white stripes.  For the "stars" I used dots of white on the mixed blues background.  This is also my early entry to Paint Party Friday.  http://paintpartyfriday.blogspot.com/  See what Eva & Kristin have going on this week. View the tremendous artwork.  This is also my first of two posts to Jennifer Mclean's The Artist's Playroom. http://www.justaddwatersilly.com/search/label/APR Come by tomorrow to see my second challenge entry.

  13. Flag paintings I love include Childe Hassam's panting in the White House, Jasper Joohn's "Flag Moratorium" (painted with complementary colors so the red, white and blue reveal themselves after staring at the flag...), and now this of yours.
I keep searching for my own interpretation, but without success, so far.

  14. I love seeing the American flag and your representation is very "Americana in form". Fabulous! Oh and to your comment you left on my blog, I never read Heidi and I haven't a clue as to why not. Thinking of going and checking it out from the library! waving hi from the hills of North Carolina :)

  17. This is gorgeous. Not being a painter, I appreciated that you showed how you made it. I came from APR and I believe you did Jenn's challenge a real service. Very beautiful, in fact.
