Gloria J Zucaro's "The Reference As A Starting Point"

This past week I experimented with using a reference as a jumping off point for two different styles of painting.  The reference is from a photograph I took of one of the set-ups that I furnished for the palette knife workshop with Ann Feldman.

The Reference

The first painting was done with pastel in an impressionistic manner. Different colors and parts of the reference were left out.  I struggled with it, trying to get the colors and values what I wanted.

Impressionistic Version # 1

The second one came more easily because I "dreamed/thought"about it during the night, so I knew what I wanted to do when I got to the studio. It is a one-direction diagonal style pastel with lots of black interlaced.  I really like it.

Diagonal Version # 2

Both paintings may be enlarged to see more detail by clicking on the image.  After the holidays are over I may try some other styles modeled after the "Masters".          Any suggestions?

Please contact me for purchase information.

I am linking this to Paint Party Friday, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Have a good week and thanks for taking a look.

Gloria

  7. I really like both of them. The first is full of light and the second has lots of movement.
If I had to choose, I might choose the second because it is so different with these intense colours, but then I might choose the first because it is more calming and I like the pink background, turquoise cloth and the fruit.

  9. I love that you used the same reference point for both paintings... and hope you do more... I had a friend who had done something very similar and created a series of paintings which she then hung down a long narrow hallway in her house... she used gauguin, matisse, picasso, monet, kandinsky and a few others... those are the ones I can remember... there was one old master in there, and i am thinking Chardin... but maybe I am remembering wrong... it was a long time ago... I look forward to seeing more of these

    1. Thank you so much Tracey. I will do my best to follow through in this direction. I tend to jump around and never finish a thought. But i think I would learn a lot by really studying the works of the masters you have mentioned. I will use your list as a starter.

  10. Oh this is the style for you Gloria...wow these are brilliant! The reference is bland in comparison to your gorgeous works.. The way you use colour is unique eye candy for me... my eyes melt your paintings are so dreamy...If I had to choose which I like best out of the two I couldn't...I love the flowers in the first one and the purple and the angle in the second one...both would make gorgeous prints... Like Tracey said I could see a marvelous series....also hope to see more!

    Hugs Giggles

    1. Thank you so much. Now it is up to me to follow through...I tend to be flighty and go from one thing to another, always looking for "new". It would certainly be a learning experience, I must try!
