Creative Jumpstart Projects for January 8 and 10, 2020

Good afternoon. 
A great day for staying in, not being a cold weather lover, but we just accept it!
ART makes it better!

The project leader for January 8th was Carolyn Dube. I love Carolyn, so much fun to watch all her YouTube videos!
She taught how to make your own tapes-like custom washi, with Mica powders. Great fun.  I did a few, until I was finally getting the knack of it.  I taped them into my new journal given to me by my longtime friend Polly D.  Then I did some doodled circles to fill in between the tape.

Creative Jumpstart leader Julie Fei-Fan Balzer did the video for January 10th.

Julies' SUPER POWER is "Curiosity" and she demonstrated making a series of cards all at the same time with the small materials, and asking "what if, what if".  I deviated a little by changing colors.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Abstracted Floral"

I had some sort of "bug" this week so didn't get around to visit my Paint Party Friday friends.  I felt better by Thursday AM so finished this piece I had been working on for awhile.  It is in oil on watercolor paper and is 15" H by 7.5"Wide. I will be selling it in my new Etsy Shop when it opens in a couple of weeks.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Inside Ourselves"

This is my entry into the current challenge on Artists in Blogland: Fall Fearless and Fly.

I have chosen the Quote Prompt which is "Not in the clamor of the crowded streets, not in the shouts and plaudits of the throng, but in ourselves, are triumph and defeat" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.  My journal is 8"H x 5"W.  I used Maimeri Watercolors, Derwent Inktense Watercolor Pencils, Gel Pens, and the original raised circles are Silks Acrylic Glaze.

This week on the Fall Fearless and Fly site our Assignment was to use either of the three ideas suggested. They were... 

"Headline Prompt:  Taking a Chance:  When did you take a chance or a leap of faith?  How did it turn out?  What did you learn?

Color Prompt:  What color do you like least? Use it!

I decided that I would concentrate on color.  I really don't like using brown.  So that is my predominate color this week.  But I soon realized that I do love all the Fall colors of orange, yellow/gold and green and using them in combination with brown made it feel "alright" to me.  I learned a lot this week about product, too.  I had started out with a journal page that had slightly dimensional circles in green Silks stamped onto it.  I painted inside some of them with orange Silks.  I let that dry.  Then I combined gesso with a brown Silks acrylic glaze.  Well, first of all, the gesso totally diluted the brown glaze, so I spilled some brown Silks acrylic glaze right from the jar to make some darker brown areas, and pressed the inner seal that had the brown on it into the gesso layer. 

I had planned to scrape through the gesso revealing the orange and green layers below, sort of like the technique of layers with crayon, then scraping through the black to reveal the colors underneath.  Warning!  Gesso totally covers all previous layers!  I tried scraping  and wiping with a wet paintbrush and paper towels, but could not get back to the glossy Silks underneath!  I had a grocery bag netting, so pressed that in, then added dollops of orange Silks, and gold and green Silks.  Then I took one of those rubber scrapers that has four designs, one cut into each side.  I scraped through the layers of paint with that.  I decided I should commemorate the page with a "2" written on a plastic bread bag closure.  The last thing I did after drying most of the surface with a hair dryer was to write in gold pen "Gesso 1st." (I see it doesn't really show up in the photo!) Hopefully I will remember that if I am going to use gesso, it had better be in the bottom layer!  Be sure to visit the Fall Fearless site to see all the creative entries this week.

 I am proud to say that I had four paintings accepted into the Randy Higbee 6 Inch Squared National Juried show in Costa Mesa, Ca.

I tried something a little different here.  As I sat watching television, I drew on my canvas different things I like or enjoy.  A heart, fish(in a pond!), a cup of coffee, the telephone,my green tile kitchen counter,trees with the leaves drawn in house shapes, a rose, the wind, a rainbow and the star with various triangle and circles.  As I drew each one, I turned the canvas 1/4 of the way around to the right.  I hope you enjoy some of these things, too.  This can be hung either vertically or horizontally.  See below.  This is in the black frame,against my natural oak floor.  The colors in this bottom pix don't seem as accurate, I think I took this picture in a different place and at a different time of day.

Last night I decided I wanted to try another eccentric drawing.  I picked one of my black tiles and my gold Uniball pen.  After I drew my string, I noticed I had a couple of "eye" shapes.  These determined much of the design, which turned into a woman and a cat!  There is another face of sorts off to the right side, but not as easily discernible.  I really love these crazy misshapen circles!  Thank you Diva, Laura for the challenge.
