Limited Palette

Good Morning!  I am all fixed up with two new knees(and in 2014, two new shoulders!).  I should be good to go for quite awhile now.

I haven't posted for many months. But wanted to show you one photo of my backyard after our Halloween snow yesterday.
I also have a mixed media painting that I finished recently called "Just Passing Through."

Hello Paint Party Friday Friends,
I admit to not getting any projects finished!  But I have been working for weeks on Cold Wax & Oil Paintings.  They take many layers and need to set up or dry before adding too many more layers in one day, so I usually have a week in between.

"Japanese Gardens"

I can't believe this month has gone by so quickly. I had to remove a lot of stuff from my studio because I needed some electrical updates.  Now, how to put my room back together in a more efficient way!  I did do one or two oils this month.  One is finished and framed, the other is renewed with some changes.  I am linking to Paint Party Friday as well as Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ and Facebook.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Moo"

My oil painting this week is self-explanatory.  It is the portrait of a cow. In the original reference I did for my barn and meadow painting two weeks ago, there was actually a cow in the field in front of the farm buildings.  I chose just to do a portrait this week rather than the whole cow.  I am posting to Paint Party Friday, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Google.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Oops Day"

Hello!  I attended a pot-luck luncheon with a group of artists friends yesterday and forgot about posting when I got home.  At our get-together in Huntley, IL every July at Sandy's house, we not only bring a salad or dessert to pass, but we bring show & tell of some things we have been working on.  Many times we also do a project.  This year Sandy had us bring some supplies and we all did some "Pourings"  It was fun and different.  She learned to do it with enamel paint for automobiles.  But we used acrylics.  I think the oil based paints are more of a surprise because they continue to "move" until they dry and you get much different results than what you started with.  We all had a couple of canvas boards or stretched canvases.  We poured some acrylic paint into small disposable cups and added enough water to make them pourable but not too runny.  We each had a large aluminum pan to do this over out on Sandy's patio.  After we were done we washed out her aluminum trays and put our mostly dry paintings into our own aluminum trays to carry our work home. 

Here are my two poured paintings, and the first project from The Clearing.

                        

This was done on an 8" square canvas board.  The blue on a 3/4" gallery wrapped canvas 10" x 8"




Below is our warm-up painting at The Clearing.  Easy figures in a group.  Start by making different lengths and widths of color next to each other with a flat brush or in my case the end of a square soft pastel.  Have the bottom end tapering off.  Turn the paper upside down and add sort of "V" shapes to the "tails" of color and add a dot to every flat end of the original strokes.  Turn right side up and add a "shadow" of color under the group.  You are done!  Easy Peasey people!  You can make them more elaborate by adding hats, or brief cases with arms, balloons, etc.                        Have a great day! :>)  Gloria

Gloria J Zucaro's "Step Four & Palette Knife Landscape"

This week for Paint Party Friday, I have two paintings to show you for the week.  I also did two ink drawings for the Diva Challenge which I posted on Monday night.  Below is my final painting done in Ann Feldman's Contemporary Impressionism class.  We all used only a palette knife and a photograph she had of the scene.  The main lesson was blocking in the three values, Dark, Mid and Light first thing.  But even as we did that we used lots of different colors in the correct value, as you can see if you click on the image to enlarge.

Next is an update on my galaxy painting.  This week I took out Saturn which was not in a good area.  Then I used all my dark colors of blues, alizarin, and veridian to make a more interesting sky/outer space in the background.  I also started mixing various grays to block in my paper clips, Christmas tree hooks, and washers.  Next I will finish painting my sculpture, add more planets in the background, and do the foreground.  Click to enlarge.

Okay, you may laugh, now!  Or are you horrified?!  :)

The painting below was done in my last portrait class with Ann Feldman...and although I did it in fun, Ann was not pleased!  The story...Ann gave us three sheets of reference photos that had eyes, noses, and mouths, all done by Sargent, or Manet.  We were to practice one of each, then move on to trying a couple others in each category.  Well, I had done my eyes at the end of last weeks class.  So I tinted the bottom 2/3rds of the canvas sheet with a peachy color.  But then instead of painting a nose separately on the middle area under the eyes, I thought it would be fun to attach the other persons(male nose, facing a different way) to my beautiful eyes!  Ann was not amused(at first!).  She said "Gloria, what have you done!, I can't stand to look at it!"  Well, I continued on my merry way with the mouth, too.  But then even I couldn't  look at it.  The eyes previously painted were too small for the big nose and mouth, and too close together.  So I changed the eyes somewhat.  I added an outline of the face(which didn't help!)  At the right bottom is the beginning effort of a mouth by Manet.  I will show you my reference "parts" so you can see what they should have looked like individually.
