Gloria J Zucaro's "Phicops With The Waltz"
The Diva's prompt today is a duo tangle using the "Phicops" tangle originated by her husband B-Rad and the "Waltz" tangle developed by one of the creators of the Zentangle brand Maria Thomas for Laura Harms, The Diva herself. The idea is to combine the two tangles to celebrate the Diva & B-Rad's anniversary that took place this past week.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Diva #108 WHYZ"
When I saw the Diva's challenge this week, I was confused. I looked for directions of how to do a tangle called "WHYZ", but couldn't find it even on Tangle Patterns!
I soon realized that Laura had made her own tangle with "Y's". Her grandmother died last week and I am imagining that she, as we often do, was asking "why?" It is also a great title because we think of our older family members as being "wise".
OOPS! I just discovered I had somehow missed the sentence where it mentioned the creator of this tangle. It is Jane MacKugler!
So here is my interpretation of Laura's design. Have a great week, and check the site to see how very imaginative artists can be!

Gloria J Zucaro's "Diva # 107"
My post today is for the Diva's Challenge #107. It is a pattern called "Quandary". It looks easy but is not! But hey, I just let go and had fun. It reminds me of pieces of rice, so some of my other patterns also start with the letter "R". Of course, "Fescue" does not! But I just felt I wanted some there. Other pattern variations are from "Ragz", "River", "Riverstone", and "Rosewood". Be sure to click on over to Laura's website to see the other artists drawings. Have a great day!

Gloria J Zucaro's "Chinese New Year"
I finally got around to last Monday's challenge from Laura Harms at her Diva blog. We were to do something for Chinese New Year. It is the Year of the Snake. "Ancient Chinese wisdom says a Snake in the house is a good omen because it means your family will not starve." This is a quote from US Bridal Guide, horoscopes! I had been thinking about it during the week and wanted to do not only a snake(tangled pattern "BLT Joos"), but Chinese Lanterns("Bulb Lantern") and some fans. I had also thought of the rising sun but ran out of room. I am just getting in under the wire!

Gloria J Zucaro's "Most Unique Vase"
Here is my second "Thank You" card for a Christmas gift. This one is for my other sister-in-law. The gift is a very unique and beautiful glass flower vase. When I began to draw it, I realized that although the neck of the vase is round, the body of the vase is oval. It is also unusual being on a stand and having a perforated lid with which to arrange the stems.

I put a tangle design around the borders of the card.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Bead Stack"
This week Laura, the hostess with the mostest at "I Am The Diva" asked us to join her in making beads tangles to represent the organization known as "Beads of Courage". As Laura says "Beads of Courage" is a wonderful charity that helps a child with a chronic illness or condition to tell their story of courage and strength as they take their medical journey. Every single bead represents something your child has done - a test, a poke or needle, a procedure, a doctor's appointment, therapy, special accomplishments, an xray, use of oxygen, mobility issues, etc. It's incredible to see what your child has been through in a very tangible way." I have done a bead stack on a 7"h x 5"W watercolor cardstock. Inside the beads are various tangles.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Mom's Favorite Dessert"
5"H x 7"W original Pen, Ink & Watercolor
SOLD
This week for The Artist Playroom,Jennifer Mclean,
http://www.justaddwatersilly.com/ offered the prompt of strawberries,or "Be Inspired By Food" because Spring made her think of strawberries. I immediately thought of strawberry shortcake because this Sunday is Mother's Day and my Mom's favorite dessert is good old fashioned strawberry shortcake made with real biscuits, not the ones in a can! Real strawberries and real whipped cream. Yum! I enjoyed making the drawing a little abstracted and used a tangle pattern for the tablecloth. I would also like to say "Hello!" to all my Paint Party Friday friends and add this to this Friday's party. Happy PPF. Please visit Kristin and Eva and all the other artists that enter their artwork there. http://paintpartyfriday.blogspot.com/

Gloria J Zucaro's "Lavender Wash"
6 1/2 " Circle. Original Ink Design on Medium Weight Vellum.
Watercolor wash in lavender, rose and a bit of blue.
Click on photo to enlarge to see detail.
I am entering this in the Inspiration Avenue Zentangle Challenge prompt from Jennifer Mclean. I also entered my Rainbow Mandala from an earlier post. This was an experiment, and I am not really happy with it. I drew all the design with a Micron #1 pen. Then I decided to try a watercolor wash on it. I didn't want to go too dark or you wouldn't be able to see the ink design. So with a 2" wash brush I wet the whole surface. Then I splattered on a rose color, then a blue. But I thought they were too concentrated, so I started tilting the paper in different directions. Of course then I got a lavender mix. It was subtle and kind of pretty, but some more colorful spots remained. I dried it and then the lavender was very subtle, almost a pale gray, still with splotches of the rose. So next time I will watercolor a paper first to see if I like it, then do the pen and ink design over that. I will also leave the colors in their individual areas instead of mixing them totally.
Gloria J Zucaro's "Assunta Mooka"
3.5" Square with Original Ink Design
This weeks Diva challenge offered by Laura at http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/ is a duo tangle using only the patterns Mooka and Assunta. I put my "string" in and then did Mooka as my featured tangle. I tried it in several different versions. I like the larger bulbs on the top ends, so did several of those. But I also tried them very small at the top and very wide channels at the bottom. I added Assunta around the edges, and part of Assunta's design inside the Mooka lines. After I finished with Assunta I shaded in some of the bulbs and bases of Mooka and in between the Assunta design.
This went pretty quickly and was a lot of fun.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Illinois Landscape Tangle"
Original 3.5"Square Ink & Colored Pencil Design
on
Official Zentangle Tile Watercolor Paper
$3.00 plus $1.00 S&H
This is my weekly challenge entry for Laura the Diva's prompt of"Home". http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/ I live in Illinois about 40 miles out from Chicago which sits on the Western side of Lake Michigan. I depicted Lake Michigan in my tangle in blue. I love the Midwest with it's corn fields and natural Prairie flowers such as the Coneflower, pictured here. We have beautiful sunsets and good soil as one of the country's " bread basket" states. I am inserting pictures of the city of Chicago on lake Michigan, and a typical cornfield.

This was a fun evening with the members of the Hoffman Estates Art League. We decided to "chill" or "Zen" and all tangle together! Lots of laughs and "What are you doing?!" when looking at variations of patterns called PURK, PARADOX, CARRES, HOLLIBAUGH, HIBRED, and BUBBLES. But as usual when you tangle they all came out beautifully!
This is my entry for Jennifer Mclean's The Artist's Playroom The prompt this week is to do a piece of artwork that is "dark and light". What could be more dark and light than black and white!
Gloria J Zucaro's "Twist & Turn"
3.5"H x 3.5"W Original Pen & Ink Design
$3.00 Email Me
This is challenge #62 from the iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com. Laura who hosts the Diva site tells us what the challenge will be each Monday. This weeks challenge came from Certified Zentangle Teacher, Marizaan van Beek, all the way from South Africa! The challenge was to do the tangle Paradox wrapped around a spiral pattern. Any other patterns used to complete the design were permitted, as long as the spirals were wrapped in the pattern Paradox which is made starting with a square or triangle. The shapes that develop are so interesting, looking like fans that are twisted and turned in all directions. After the ink design is complete you shade some areas to give it more dimension. Some of the other patterns used are variations on Jeewels,Vega,Carres,Jetties, Feathers and Beadlines. Comment Here

Gloria J Zucaro's "Zen Thank You"
3.5"H x 3.5"W Original Pen and Ink Design
This is my Paint Party Friday entry. I made this thank you tangle for a dear friend who remembered something I had mentioned that I wanted a few years ago. While on vacation in Florida she found it and brought it home for me. Such a thoughtful person with an extremely good memory! Thank you Eva and Kristin for hosting the party!

Diva Challenge # 61
This weeks "I am the Diva" challenge was to use the pattern Golven in your tangle. The worms' body is done with Golven. Other patterns used are Echo,Msst,Slalom,Bubbles, and Cat-kin. I don't know what made me think of a worm! The pattern itself did lead me to think of a coil, so maybe that is why. For every worm there has to be an apple, hence the title.

These two tangle designs are for Laura's " I am the Diva" challenge this week. Last week Laura's darling baby, Artoo, was in the hospital with pneumonia, so no challenge last week. I am so happy that Artoo is recouping at home now which is less stressful for them both as well as the rest of Laura's family.
The challenge design this week is doing auras around your basic design. An aura is sort of like an echo, where the waves of sound keep flowing outward, or like throwing a pebble into water. In my first design I did a tribute to my daughter, Lucy, as April 17 is her birthday. I will frame this to give to her when we get together. She works as an elementary education art teacher, so no nights out during the week! :-) The design says April 17 2012 happy Birthday Lucy.
In my second design I went through my collection of designs and picked about 7 different designs and did my variations on them. Then I began to make an aura around them. As the lines flow outward they change as they bump into the other designs, so that you always have a change of shape. I love the random nature of tangles because the end result is always a surprise.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Colorized Peacock"
5"H x 7"L Original Mixed Media Design
This is my final version of my thank you card to my daughter Faye and her family for the Christmas presents they gave to me. A necklace and earrings, a journal and note cards all with a peacock motif were my lovely gifts this year. I used ink pen and some metallic gel markers on watercolor card stock to make my artwork. I think she will really like it, I do! :-) Below is the card before I added color. I would be interested to know which version you prefer. Market research for future projects ya know!
Gloria J Zucaro's "During Christmas Break"
My tangle series. This is 2.5"H x 3.5"W on 140 LB watercolor stock, and comes with a little envelope for mailing. I will put the card and it's envelope into a standard size envelope for mailing.
$3.00 plus $1.00 shipping
If you would like it framed, see below for example of framing.

During these very busy days, I have not had the opportunity to paint. But while waiting in the doctor's waiting room, or for family to arrive at the airport, there is always time for small pen work.
